The tempering process is the sudden cooling of the glasses with air by heating them to temperatures between 600°C and 650°C with special heating systems. As the temperature decreases, the surface hardens. With the cooling of the outer parts first and then the inner parts, pressure occurs on the surfaces of the glass and tensile stresses on the inner part of the glass.
While tempered glass can withstand thermal shock of 300°C, non-tempered glass can break when subjected to thermal shock of approximately 40°C.
After the glass becomes tempered glass, cutting, grinding and chip removal cannot be performed on it. The heat treatments do not change the volume, color, clarity and chemical structure of the glass.
Types of Tempered GlassThe "High Ball Drop Test" is applied in the mechanical testing of tempered glasses. While a 6 mm tempered glass is broken by the impact of a 500 gram steel ball dropped from a height of 2 meters, the untempered normal glass is 30 cm in the same experiment. It is broken by a ball of the same weight falling from a height.
